Artist Biography

Chong Siew Ying is a prominent contemporary Malaysian artist, known for her evocative, semi-abstract figurative paintings that poetically blend Eastern and Western artistic traditions. Born in Kuala Lumpur in 1969, she was educated in both Malaysia and France, completing her studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1995.

Her work is characterized by bold brushwork and a monochromatic palette, often integrating Chinese calligraphy and ink painting techniques with Western oil painting. The figures in her compositions are usually caught in moments of introspection or lost in expansive, dreamlike landscapes, exploring themes of identity, existentialism, and the human condition.

Chong Siew Ying has held numerous solo exhibitions in Malaysia and has been part of group shows in Singapore, France, China, and Australia. She has won several awards, including the Malaysian Young Contemporary Art Award in 1998 and the Juror's Choice in the Philip Morris Malaysian Art Awards in 2003.
